About the event

Mike Rufo's songs arc across the waves of life, spanning three albums of original music, including his latest, Helsinki (co-produced with Erik Yates, Hot Buttered Rum and featuring Joe Craven, Sharon Gilchrist, Sarah Larkin, and many other top Bay Area artists). Rooted in folk and rock, Mike’s musical language builds upon powerful lyrics, driving rhythms, and melodic riffs that explore emotional depths and transformation. Mike’s repertoire moves seamlessly across a range of original and re-imagined traditional and contemporary songs, from poignant to powerful, from rockin’ to refined, he will take you on a journey of the heart, body, and mind. Mike’s latest album, Helsinki, has been heard on dozens of radio stations throughout the US and abroad.

Mike has also played with leading contemporary artists such as 2016 NPR Tiny Desk Winner Gaelynn Lea and performed on stages throughout the US and abroad including Get Off the Grid Fest ’23, The Freight and Salvage (Berkeley), The Mint (Los Angeles), Sunshine of Love Festival (Santa Cruz), The Fremont Abbey (Seattle), The Cultch (Vancouver), WDVX Blue Plate Special (Knoxville), Rockwood Music Hall (NYC), Haight Ashbury Street Fair (SF), Swedish American Hall (San Francisco), SF Golden Gate Park Bandshell, the legendary KPIG-FM (live, Santa Cruz), and many others.

Jimmy Leslie is the writer and star of the Spirit Hustler’s sonic cinema. A fixture on the Bay Area music scene for many moons, Leslie’s eclectic resume is insightful. He is internationally respected as the Frets Editor at Guitar Player magazine, and the two instrumentals on Spirit Hustler showcase his “freehand” percussive fingerstyle. He’s interviewed everyone from Carlos Santana to Jack White, and coordinated GP Presents events ranging from Paco de Lucia to Buddy Guy. Jimmy has shared stages with Tab Benoit, Luther Dickinson, Sonny Landreth, and Devon Allman. Leslie co-founded the Star City and Guitarfish Music Festivals, and authored the eco-musical Guitarfish Adventures. Leslie’s solo records Surfin’ the Swamp and Dance Until Forever feature players from Galactic and the Honey Island Swamp Band, respectively.
