Love songs, but make them a little unhinged. That’s the energy Anjali brings to her music: heart-on-sleeve lyrics delivered with a wink, a wince, or a mic drop.
A self-taught guitarist and first-generation Indian-American, Anjali Bothra came up in a house full of music, harmonizing with her sisters and soaking up everything from sad-girl indie rock to hip-hop to Hindi folk songs.
After moving to Portland in 2022, her sound evolved. In 2024 she built a full band—, groove-heavy drummer Sebastian Goodridge, and grounding bassist Zach Putnam. Together they perform as Anjali & The Unhinged, reshaping her intimate recordings into a genre-fluid, emotionally volatile live show.
Anjali’s post-Apathy singles stretch across language and feeling. “Lost in Translation” shifts between English, Hindi, and Spanish. “Sociopath” turns numbness into a bluesy shrug. One moment she’s rapping at double speed, the next crooning a heartbreaking hook. Her lyrics are funny, self-lacerating, and painfully sharp.
It’s not polished. It’s real. And it’s working.
